J.J. Putz never had a physical when acquired

At some point, doesn't the perception just become the reality?  The ineptitude of this organization of has reached new, fantastic lows this offseason.  Every day, seemingly, comes with more news and/or insight into a front office that can't seem to get out of its own way.  Today?  J.J. Putz never received a physical when the Mets traded for him.  The team says that they knew about his bone spurs and were confident he could pitch with them.

Let me continue, they knew he had bone spurs in 2008 and pitched with them, so why not again in 2009?  Let me get this straight, Putz pitched with bone spurs in his worst season to date, so it's probably fine if he pitches through it again?  No!  That makes negative sense.  Not only that, Putz says the Mets pushed him to pitch through injury, which eventually led to his season ending surgery.  Now that my friends, is quality management.

Matt, Benny, get on here.  Defend this organization, please.  How many things like this have to happen before, i don't know, Omar gets fired?  The team gets moved West?  The Wilpon's are forced to sell?  The Middle East declares war on Flushing?  Is there any floor to this free fall?  Honestly, the Mets had better play out of their minds this season or heads are going to roll around Flushing like a spilled can full of marbles.

It's hard to defend the organization these days, so I am really trying to focus on the positive. LIke Reyes & Ollie Perez being 100%. I may do a post about this.

However, in this particular case where a player is traded, physicals are rarely performed. Rather, the trading teams swap medical data.

When a team signs a free agent, it never announces the signing until the player passes a physical examination. The protocol is different for trades.

Before signing off on a deal, teams exchange medical records of the players involved, but very rarely are physical exams conducted.

so was he traded for, or was he a free agent? If he was traded for, that makes your link somewhat obsolete right?

He was traded for. Not sure I follow what you mean Will. The point is that traded players don't have physicals. So while it is "in" to bash mets management, they should be bashed for take a risk and trading for a player who was injured. Not because they didn't do something that nobody does.

im under the impression trades are always 'pending a physical.' From the language in your quotes.. it appears not all signed players go through physicals. I read it as "the protocol is different for trades." is an independent though and it goes onto explaining the process of physicals/free agents. the team that previously owned raul ibanez sends their medical records to the new one. i just feel like trades are always pending physicals.. unless thats just a figure of speech for exchanging info.

If he was damaged goods when the Mets got him, they should have immediately let the Mariners and MLB know. There are plenty of precedents for this in the history of trades. Either way, mets bungled this, they either believed the Mariners, who traded a hurt reliever, OR they failed to properly investigate his physical state. At some point someone needed to evaluate his health, no? Everyone knew he had arm problems and that it why he was relatively CHEAP. Reminds me of an old adage-If something looks too good to be true it probably isn't. Mets were looking for a one year showcase year from Putz as an 8th inning reliever, but the fact that no one else bit on it should say something.
Omar, please resign. and thanks for bringing Tatis back. It is
truly
